Entry from: Methven, New Zealand Entry Title: “Part Deux” Entry: “Now that we are bright eyed and bushy tailed, yeah right, here’s the rest of the adventure. We woke up very cozy in our new Kathmandu sleeping bags and found that it must have been -600 degrees outside and there not just condensation on the inside of the van but it had frozen so there was ice IN the van. But we managed to haul ourselves out of bed/van and make ourselves some breakfast and get ready to hike. We were planning to hit the trail at 8:30 but of course didn’t leave until 9:20. We were prepared for any sort of weather with our long underware, multiple layers and rain jackets and of course it turned out to be one of the most beautiful days we have had here. Our shoes were still wet from the day before so Robin wore her sneakers and brought her Keen’s along and Zachary decided to put plastic bags over his feet and put them back in his damp shoes, which worked quite well. So off we went up the Miner’s track towards Woolshed Creek Hut. This track followed Woolshed Creek through the forest and past various remnants from the old coal mines that used to be there. It came up to the top of the hills where there was a reconstructed entrance to the Blackburn Mine which was the last of the mines to close in 1931 owned by soandso Burnett

Selecting a Sleeping Bag

www.spadout.com Tips on selecting a sleeping bag.

What about WINTER camping?

I would like to try winter camping this year. I know it’s really early to talk about winter, but I want time to look around to buy the right gear. What would I need specifically for WINTER camping. Starting with the basics like the type of tent and sleeping bag, since everything I own is for summer use.

Also, what do people do when they winter camp besides hiking, or is that it. During the summer I like to be out on the water, but that’s obviously not going to be an option.

Any other winter camping tips would be useful.
Thanks
It will be up north, so freezing temps but probably above zero degrees F.

Funny camping pranks?

I need some funny camping pranks, not mean ones though. My friend and I are going to put a rubber snake in her sleeping bag and also were going to get her mom away from us for a while and me and the other people going camping with us are going to blow up tons of balloons and stick them all in her tent. So anything like that??
